What is RSS?An RSS (Really Simple Syndication) provides news and/or information updates from a website in a simple form for your computer. You read these files in a program called an 'aggregator' or 'reader', which collects news from various websites and provides it to you in a simple form. Because there are so many different types of aggregator available the RYA cannot offer user support on the use of the agregators, although we have proided some links to some free downloads of these pieces of software at the bottom of the page.
Does a feed subscription cost money?
The RYA Feeds are free!
How to use RSS Feeds? The first thing you need is something called a news reader. This is a piece of software that checks RSS feeds and lets you read any new content that has been added to them. There are many different versions, some of which are accessed using a browser, and some of which are downloadable applications. Browser-based news readers let you catch up with your RSS feed subscriptions from any computer, whereas downloadable applications let you store them on your main computer. There is a range of different news readers available and new versions are appearing all the time.
If you click on the RSS button you can subscribe to the feed.
Some browsers, including Internet Explorer 7, Firefox, Opera and Safari, have RSS readers built in. This can make subscribing to feeds much easier.
The following feed readers are small downloads, normally only taking a few seconds for those who's browser cannot independently read the feeds:
