Race, Religion or Belief

The Equality Act 2010 provides protection from discrimination on the grounds of:

  • race – including colour, ethnic origin, national origin or nationality.  Ethnic origin refers to racial, religious or cultural factors which give a group a shared history and a distinct social identity;
  • any religion, religious or philosophical belief, or lack of religion or belief.

We have covered both here because people's cultural identity is often linked to their religion, and religious practices or requirements may be perceived as presenting more of a barrier to participation in sailing and boating than ethnic or national origin.

For information on engaging with different faith or ethnic groups within your local community, please download the Guidance notes on the right.
