British Skiff success sees awards won and nominations received

The British Sailing Team’s stellar 2017 season in the 49er class has seen its members recognised for a number of sporting awards.

Dylan Fletcher and Stuart Bithell took the top prize at the British Sailing Team’s own end of season awards last month, taking home the ‘Athlete of the Year’ title (with trophy donated by the British Olympic Association) following their World and European Championship golden double.

The duo become the first 49er pair since the award’s inception in 2006 (Chris Draper-Simon Hiscocks) to pick up the British Sailing Team’s top performance trophy.

Their teammates James Peters and Fynn Sterritt were also recognised as the team’s ‘Most Improved’ performers following their silver successes at the World and European Championships, while 49er coach Ben Rhodes was the runaway winner of the ‘Golden Funnel’ award for coaching excellence following the squad’s outstanding results this year.

Two-time Olympian Rhodes was also shortlisted for the UK Coaching ‘High Performance Coach of the Year’ award alongside sporting peers from athletics, golf and fencing.

Fletcher and Bithell, meanwhile, are in the running for further accolades having been named as 2018 Yachts & Yachting Awards finalists in the Marlow-sponsored ‘Racing Performance of the Year’ category.

You can cast your Yachts & Yachting Awards vote for the world-beating duo by Thursday 14 December, and in doing so be in with a chance of winning a fantastic holiday for two!
