Visit the Dinghy Show for expert top tips from British Sailing Team stars
British Sailing Team Olympians, Paralympians, World and European Championship medallists will be heading to Alexandra Palace next month for the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show (4-5 March), and you can catch them there!
Pick the brains of some of Britain’s best small boat sailing talents as the annual two-day show provides the perfect start to the dinghy sailing season, with talks, coaching sessions and all the latest boats and gear to get you sailing faster.
Rio Olympian and Nacra 17 European Champion Ben Saxton, plus leading 470 Women’s duo Sophie Weguelin-Eilidh McIntyre and Nacra 17 sailor Tom Phipps – fresh from their World Cup medal-winning feats in Miami – will be on hand over the weekend, with two-time Paralympic medallist Alexandra Rickham joining the action on Sunday.
They’ll be calling in and offering tips and insight on various stands across the two days, including British Sailing Team partners Zhik, Harken and Marlow Ropes.
If you’ve set your own sights on becoming a future medallist then the sailors will also be visiting the RYA British Youth Sailing/Volvo Cars stand throughout the weekend, and RYA staff and representatives from Class Associations will share information and advice on how to get involved with all levels of racing from club or regional level through the British Youth Sailing Pathway. Weguelin (Saturday, 1pm) and Saxton (Sunday, 12pm) will be appearing at the Optimist Class stand.
Weguelin and McIntyre and experts from the University of Chichester will help get you fit to sail with a ‘Boat fit boot camp’ (Saturday, 3pm) in the RYA Coaching Area, before the 470 duo offer you their expert advice on how to maximise communication and teamwork on the racecourse in a ‘Communications and roles’ talk at 4pm.
Ben Saxton takes to the stage to help present the RYA Club of the Year Awards at 4pm on Saturday before offering his own insight on how to win the Endeavour Trophy – dubbed the ‘Champion of Champions’ prize in the dinghy sailing world – and on his next challenge of mastering a new foiling Nacra 17 in his bid for Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020.
The sailors will also be on hand at a special brunch exclusively for RYA Gold Members on Sunday morning. Places are limited, so don’t miss out, book your place today. Meanwhile, British Sailing Team Meteorologist Simon Rowell can help you get the best out of your time on the water with his top tips on reading the local weather and tides (Saturday & Sunday 11.15am).
