Windsurfing advanced instructor training

RYA advanced windsurfing instructors are qualified to teach the Advanced course and all stages of the Youth Windsurfing Scheme under the supervision of a senior instructor.

The Advanced Instructor course has a clinic-based approach, appealing to a wider spectrum. The core content of the instructor course enables instructors to teach the main advanced course in the scheme. In addition, instructors can be assessed during the course to enable them to teach further advanced clinics in advanced carving skills and bump and jump.

Eligibility

Intermediate planing instructor:

  • Minimum age 18
  • Minimum of a very competent Advanced certificate holder plus clinics in waterstarting and carve gybing
  • RYA Powerboat level 2 certificate
  • Valid first aid qualification*
  • Evidence of 100 hours logged as an Intermediate planing instructor

Please note that if you wish to attend a tidal instructor training course, the Powerboat Level 2 should be completed at a coastal location.

Publications

Intermediate instructor coaching notes, W33 instructor handbook, W4 instructor logbook and G51 intermediate windsurfing handbook.

Course duration

The course will be run over five days.

Conversion of Level 4 and 5 Instructors

Those holding the Level 4 or 5 instructor qualifications prior to the scheme review have been transferred to Advanced instructors, but must complete a conversion course before their next revalidation is due. In addition, Advanced instructors will become eligible to run some or all of the Advanced Clinics - exactly which ones will be decided on an individual basis.

Conversion courses are one day regional events. Further details are available from your Regional Development or Liaison Officer. These courses will cease to be run from Spring 2009.

* All candidates are required to hold a first aid certificate.  Acceptable certificates include the RYA’s First Aid Certificate, First Aid at Work, First Aid at Sea, or any other certificate issued on completion of a course which is a minimum of one day’s duration, recognised by the Health and Safety Executive and includes the treatment of hypothermia, cold shock and drowning.
