Racing

Racing for all club members

Racing is at the core of most clubs activities and yet often it is only a small proportion of the club members who are actually involved.  A lack of confidence and skills, can hold many people back from getting involved in club racing, which in turn can hold them back from getting fully involved with the club socially.

Many clubs have found running a ‘Start Racing Course’ for members a successful way to encourage people to get involved in club racing. It provides all the skills required to get started, including how to maximise your boat speed and outwit your opponents.  You can combine this with a ‘buddying’ system where less experienced racers go out with the more experienced racers.

Most of the ideas presented in these fact sheets have been developed and proved successful by sailing clubs and centres around the UK so there is a good chance that they will work for other clubs and centres too!

Case studies have also been included to reinforce the ideas by providing evidence that these ideas put into practice can help increase and develop participation. For more information contact your RYA Regional Development Officer
