Stability Data 

The RYA Stability List provides a list of yachts with some of their parameters for which the RYA has stability information. This currently only includes monohull ballasted sailing boats, but there are future plans to extend this to other types of vessel.

To assist in understanding yacht stability, the above link to Monohull Ballasted Sailing Yacht Stability, will take you to an extract from an RYA Magazine entitled "Stability Explained". This extract explains stability assessment in general for monohull ballasted sailing boats, with particular relevance to the RCD and ISO 12217. A more detailed explanation of stability for all types of recreational craft, including powerboats, is given in the RYA booklet G23.

The RYA Stability List is regularly updated when information becomes available. Additionally the RYA has further assessed some of the models in the list as standard. These standards fall into one of two groups.

The first group are noted in the list as RYA Validated. With these standards a boat of the model has been assessed for stability against ISO 12217, either by the RYA or validated by the RYA. Provided the parameters of a sistership are the same, then the standard may be used to obtain an RYA MCA SCV stability allocation using the ISO 12217 option. The second group, noted as STOPS Validated, have had at least ten boats of the model previously assessed by the RYA for MCA SCV stability allocation, using the STOPS method. Again, provided the parameters of a sistership are the same, then the standard may be used to obtain an RYA MCA SCV stability allocation using the STOPS option. In either case to obtain an RYA MCA SCV stability allocation the RYA form SS1 (see MCA Coding web page) should be completed with the ID of the standard, as given in the first column of the Stability List, entered into either section 3Ci or 3Di of the form as appropriate. Dimensions in the Stability List are in metres, kilograms and degrees. Data marked - or blank is unknown to the RYA.
