Miles Handley has worked as a summer holiday instructor for the last two summers, in England and the South of France.
What experience did you need to get these jobs?
I qualified as an RYA Dinghy Instructor. Before starting this I had experience of dinghy sailing, racing and had several dinghy sailing certificates.
What are the good points of your job?
I like working outside on the water and beach when the weather is good. Most people enjoy themselves on courses, so working with them is fun and you can become good friends. It is also rewarding teaching people to sail.
What are the bad points of your job?
When the weather is bad working outside is sometimes not so much fun, but the god days make up for this.
What is the pay like?
The hourly rate of pay for a sailing instructor is not very high when you are on basic rates, but the rates go up with experience and repeated seasons with the same company.
What advice – in terms of getting the right qualifications and choosing the best job – would you give to someone who wants to give it a go?
You need the necessary experience to undertake and pass the sailing instructor course, which also requires money and time. But even if you don’t have the experience to get this certificate, it can still be possible to work as an assistant sailing instructor or general helper at a sailing school.
