We know that in the UK there’s an amazing array of people who work together to create vibrant and successful clubs that keep our sports alive. To recognise and promote their outstanding achievements we launched the RYA Club of the Year Award back in 2007. Ten years on, and we are relaunching the Award to reflect the changing environment in which clubs are operating.
Over recent years a number of research projects have provided a greater insight into many aspects of clubs, sport and outdoor activity, current and potential participants. A number of these projects have been focussed specifically on watersports, sailing and boating in general and have looked at:
• which groups of people are likely to have an interest in boating,
• why, when and how people take up boating activities,
• how frequently and regularly they participate, how long for and in what discipline
• what keeps them in the sport, the reasons they stop participating, what brings them back and
• what it is that club members like/dislike about their clubs and what prospective members expect and want from their club experience.
“All of this information can help clubs ensure that they are best placed to attract new and retain members. This insight can also help clubs to; consider what they offer, to deliver the right kinds of activities, in the right format, advertised in the most effective ways and to create environments which make it attractive and possible for a greater number of people to enjoy our activities” explains RYA Club Support Officer Jackie Bennetts explains.
In light of this research and our enhanced understanding of the elements that contribute to successful, vibrant and forward-looking clubs in the current climate the RYA is keen to encourage, reward, learn from and share examples of innovation and best practice.
The RYA has reviewed the Club of the Year Award and will relaunch it on the 16th September at the Southampton Boat Show.
Applications will be invited from affiliated clubs that can evidence their recent success in one of five new categories: Innovation, Inclusivity, Facility Development, Increasing Participation and Communications.
More information and the application form will be available on the RYA website from the 16th September, so now is a great time to reflect back over your club’s recent successes and start collecting evidence to support your application.
