Calling all sailors-your sport needs you
If you get a call, please stay on the line.
The RYA is urging sailors nationwide to take part in the Sport England Active People telephone survey if requested to help raise the profile of sailing across the nation.
“We are asking sailors and windsurfers who receive a call to participate in the Active People Survey to not hang up the phone but to stay on the line and agree to take part, so Sport England can get accurate results for the number of people who take part in the sport” explains RYA Sport Development Manager Jon White.
“The survey will take roughly 15 minutes but the results play an important role in helping us to understand the picture of participation in our sport, right across the country. Many people take part in sailing as a lifestyle activity and may not consider it to be a sport, but whether you are a cruiser, racer or windsurfer; we want all sailors to speak up."
The Active People Survey measures the proportion of adults who participate in sport and is conducted by telephone calling home phone numbers selected at random. If you are asked to take part in an important survey about leisure and recreational activities then please stay on the line because it could be the Active People Survey.
Questions might include describing any sporting activity you are involved in or how often you have taken part and whether you have taken instruction in any sporting activity in the last four weeks.
Jon concludes: “Results from the last Sport England Survey show that there are 68,000 people who participate in sailing at least once a week, and our research shows us that more than 850,000 people are out there enjoying the sport over the course of a year. If you do get a call to take part, please do not hang up the phone.”
