Come and join the RYA in Weymouth and soak up the Olympic atmosphere! There’s so much to see and do! The festivities are well under way in Weymouth and there is fantastic buzz in the air.
Olympic and Paralympic sailing heritage
You can see the RYA’s Olympic and Paralympic sailing heritage exhibition at the Weymouth Bayside Festival, watch the Olympic sailing on the two huge screens on Weymouth Beach at the Live Site and try lots of different sports including sailing and windsurfing in the free Sports Arena plus there are a huge range of cultural events to enjoy. Weymouth Bayside Festival
There’s lots of other entertainment on offer at the Bayside Festival every day and tomorrow (Wednesday 01 August) will include King of the Mat, Black Cats Helicopter Displays and the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marine Commando Training Centre - with a full orchestra on the main stage.
The festival is running daily until Sunday 12 August and offers all day live music, food courts, more than 50 retail stands and an arts and craft zone featuring up to 20 local artists. Classic passenger ship, M.V Balmoral will be offering excursions from the Pleasure Pier, within the festival site, providing a perfect platform to view the sailing races. Weymouth Beach Live Site – come and watch the Olympic sailing
The free to enter Weymouth Beach Live site is a great place to watch live, dedicated London 2012 Olympic sailing action for fans who don’t have access to full coverage of the Games and can only watch edited highlights on freeview television.
The sailing events, with live commentary from the BBC, will be shown between noon and 6pm and will be followed by other Olympic sports. Two giant screens are showing live Olympic sport on Weymouth Beach for free, plus a huge range of cultural events, Bayside Festival, beach sports area, live music, dance and many more free events – see www.dorsetforyou.com/sailing2012
Getting to Weymouth & Portland
There are many ways to get to Weymouth & Portland during the London 2012 Olympic sailing events. Visitors should plan ahead and consider walking, cycling or using public transport where possible. Park and ride facilities can be pre-booked or paid for on the day.
Weymouth & Portland Borough Council’s Brief Holder for Tourism and Culture, Cllr Ian Bruce said: “The borough of Weymouth and Portland is hosting more exciting events this week for all the family to enjoy. There’s lots going on - from the sailing competitions to some really unique entertainment and activities. There’s a real buzz in the air and we want more people to come and share in this unique experience. So come and join us and soak up the Olympic atmosphere by the sea.”
With day time tickets for the Bayside Festival only costing £1 and children under twelve free, this must be the best value Family Fun Day in the UK."
During the first few days of the Games, traffic has flowed freely in and out of the town and public transport has been running to schedule as visitors travel to the borough to get involved with the Games.
There are four local park and ride sites available for visitors to use and people can book these in advance or pay on the day.Accommodation is still available in the borough.
