Harwich Festival of Power 

Accident at the British and European Powerboat Championships results in sad death of a competitor.

Following an accident during the European and British Powerboat Championships yesterday, 31 July, at the Harwich Festival of Power experienced racer, Mr Ian Stirling 59 from St Austell, sadly died.  

“Mr Stirling was a highly experienced pilot with 25 years of powerboat racing at a European and world championship level.  He is going to be greatly missed within the powerboat racing family”. John Puddifoot, RYA Powerboat Racing Manager.  

Mr Stirling was competing in the European Championships for offshore powerboat Class 2 litre/3c, when his boat hit a wave causing both Mr Stirling and his crew to be thrown into the water.  No other boats were involved in the incident.  His crew sustained some injuries and is recovering in hospital.  

John Puddifoot “Our deepest condolences go to Mr Stirling’s longstanding partner and family at this very sad time". 

A tribute will be paid to Mr Stirling this afternoon, 1 August, on the water by fellow competitors and RYA officials”.  

The RYA has been working closely with local authorities and will conduct an enquiry into the accident.
