Humber's young sailors get OnBoard
A chance to go sailing for youngsters in Humberside
Humberside becomes the most recent region of the UK to benefit from the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) OnBoard scheme.
The OnBoard scheme, one of the flagship programmes run by the RYA, is a grass roots programme which introduces sailing and windsurfing to young people aged 8 to 18, through schools, youth groups and RYA training centres.
Suzie Blair, RYA Regional Development Officer for North East and Humber said: We are delighted to be expanding the RYA OnBoard programme in Yorkshire. Liz Wrigglesworth has been working as the OnBoard Development Officer in West and South Yorkshire for three years with great success, we have therefore expanded her contract to include the Humber area.
"There are many clubs in the Humber who we are very much looking forward to working with to help them encourage more regular, family, young people and adult activity. Liz is a dedicated OnBoard Development Officer and her experience will be invaluable when supporting the new Humber partnership."
“We are delighted to be expanding the RYA OnBoard programme,” said Liz Wrigglesworth, RYA Yorkshire and Humber OnBoard Development Officer.
“The scheme has been running throughout Yorkshire for a couple of years now and more sailing centres are joining as OnBoard partners every month. Expanding into Humberside will mean we can offer sailing opportunities to even more local children.”
“Some of the most talented and successful sailors in the UK began their sailing careers in Yorkshire and Humberside,” explained Liz.
“The OnBoard scheme is gathering pace across the country. This is great news for youngsters as sailing combines health, exercise and skills development.”
Over a ten year period OnBoard aims to introduce a minimum of 500,000 children to sailing and windsurfing in the UK, converting over 10% of them into regular participants. So far it’s well on track.
