New data improving E-Numbers system
Changes to the Portsmouth Number List.
Since the 2010 PN (Portsmouth Numbers) List was published in March, followers of the RYA Portsmouth Yardstick Scheme will have noticed some subtle changes which would include the introduction of new experimental numbers.
For the first year, these ‘E-Numbers’ have replaced the previously used ‘Trial Numbers’ which have now been dropped from the PN List. Because of the new website which collects race data throughout the season, the PYG (Portsmouth Yardstick Group) can dip into the website data at periodical intervals and review the progress of a boats performance as it is racing every week.
After reviewing the E-Numbers published in the 2010 list and looking at the new boats coming into the scheme via the website, Dr Jason Smithwick, Chairman of the Portsmouth Yardstick Group has revealed that the Cherub and the International Moth have both had their numbers amended based on the new data which has come in over the first half of the season.
The PYG has also been able to establish a good base for the RS100 which was launched in January 2010 and has been actively racing under the Portsmouth yardstick.
Bas Edmonds, Technical Manager, explains, “The RS100 is now starting to register some good race results against its name and as such the PYG have been confident in publishing an E-Number for it. Clubs using any E-Number should remember that it is an Experimental Number and therefore should keep a close eye on its use to ensure that it is providing fair racing for the club.
“From the race results it is looking like the initial number for the boat of 1005 and 1014 for the 10.2m and 8.4m rigs respectively was a little conservative and that the number published by the RYA should produce fairer racing for the boat. The number published would cover both rigs as the data coming in is not making a distinction in performance between the two configurations.”
The updated Portsmouth Number list has been published on the PYS website (www.pys.org.uk) and is only available to view to those clubs registered and entering data to the website.
