Two youngsters from Glossop Sailing Club will represent the North West at the National Finals of the Honda RYA Youth Rib Championship at the Southampton Boat Show in September after winning the regional event on Saturday.

Joshua Harbut (far right), aged 16, won the 13-16 age group with a time of 59 seconds, the fastest scored this year in all regional finals. He had taken time out on the third day of a ten day Explorer Scouts expedition following the Shropshire Trail. He has been sailing for two years, took up powerboat driving a year ago and has a RYA Powerboat Level 2 qualification.

In the 8-12 age group, first place was taken by Lauren McGlashan (front right), aged 10, who only took up RIB driving four weeks ago after undergoing a intensive training programme.

Lauren said she was surprised and proud to be going forward to represent her club after winning the heat at the Lancashire Powerboat Racing Club at Carr Mill, St Helens.

Second place in the 13-16 group was taken by 14 year-old Maria Watkins, also from Glossop, with Michael Bowring from Lancashire Powerboat Racing Club in third spot.

In the 8-12 group, Jack Pickles from LPRC was second and Jamie Norris-Still was third.   |

The Honda RYA Youth Rib Championship, sponsored by Honda and Ribcraft, is a National Championship in which 8-16 year old RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) drivers can demonstrate their boat handling skills in a race against the clock in the hope of winning a 4.8m Ribcraft or Honwave T40 for their club.

David Hodgkinson, Marketing Communications Manager for event sponsor Honda said: “Honda strives to be "a company that society wants to exist" and so as a major manufacturer of outboard engines we are delighted to be sponsoring the 12th year of the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship. Inspiring and encouraging young people to discover and pursue a passion for boating, is as important as giving them the skills to do so in a safe and responsible way. We are proud together with the RYA, to be doing both through this unique competition”.

Thanks to Championship sponsors Honda and Ribcraft.
