RYA CEVNI test goes online

It is now possible to take your CEVNI test online, anywhere, anytime.

This online test is an alternative to the paper-based test that has been in operation since the 1990s and will provide ease of access to test facilities for those who don’t live near a RYA training centre.

The online CEVNI test, like all RYA courses and tests, is run through RYA training centres.  Paper-based tests are still available.

How to take the CEVNI test online

You can practise the test before taking it for real by going to our RYA Interactive site and clicking "Try the test". You can try the practise test as many times as you like and your score won't be recorded. When you feel ready to take the real test, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Contact an RYA training centre to arrange and pay for your test. Costs for the CEVNI test will vary between training centres. You can choose a centre by going to 'Where's my nearest?'. Choose 'show me ICC test centres', tick the ICC CEVNI test (online) box and enter your location.
  2. Your chosen centre will give you access to the online CEVNI test
  3. On completing the CEVNI test you will be told immediately whether you have been successful or not.
  4. Download and print your CEVNI test confirmation

You can also use the 'Where's my nearest?' search to find centres that run practical training and assessment for the ICC.

Why do I need to take the CEVNI test?

If you are thinking of cruising Europe’s inland waters then you will need to validate your ICC (International Certificate of Competence) for inland waters by taking the CEVNI test. Then simply send your CEVNI test confirmation, your existing ICC and a new passport photo to our Certification Team.

The CEVNI test is the code governing navigation on European inland waterways.  It includes rules and signs that skippers of pleasure craft are expected to know and follow.
