Shelley set to soar in San Benedetto
This weekend sees the UK’s Powerboat Racing sweetheart Shelley Jory head to San Benedetto for the Powerboat P1 Italian Grand Prix of the sea.
Shelley and Navigator Audrien Ciantar (Malta) will head to San Benedetto on a high following their recent success at the Turkey Grand Prix two weeks ago which saw them make history in P1 powerboat as the first all girl team to secure a Supersport Grand Prix title.
The race was not without incident however when Shelley and Audrienne were once again penalised for speeding in the race, this is largely as a result of their total concentration on trimming the boat for ultimate performance and taking their eye of the speedo! Something they will be aiming not to repeat this weekend as the penalty meant a disappointing drop from second to fourth but there was enough in the bag for them to still take that historic win.
Reacting to the remarkable news, an overwhelmed Jory held back the tears after the hard weekend’s racing on the stunning Bosphorus waterway in Istanbul.

She said: “To be the first all-lady team in any sport is pretty special but to make history is a completely different sensation. It’s wonderful to prove that we can actually go out there and regularly compete with the boys. Everyone was so supportive and congratulated us on a deserved victory.”
Paying tribute to her co-pilot, Jory highlighted the champion-pair’s instinctive understanding and positive communication as key components of their success. “We both share the same passion, determination and ambition for powerboat racing. We communicate our feelings even whilst driving.
All eyes will now be on the girls this weekend as the Green flag drops for the Italian Grand Prix of the Sea. Something Shelley’s fully aware of as she prepares for the event “ I’m very excited to get back on familiar water in San Benedetto, I raced there last year in Powerboat P1 Evolution and had a very successful week-end and I am hoping I can do that all again.” continuing “I love Italy and San Benedetto is a fantastic location to race in. Audrien and I learnt a lot at the last grand prix in Istanbul and are ready to do battle again. Although I am praying for some rough weather to come in which suits our 41 foot Chaudron powerboat.”
