Sutton Harbour Marina gets active
Sailors and boat-owners enjoyed a special event in Sutton Harbour Marina last Saturday (28 April), when the RYA’s Active Marina Programme came to Plymouth.
The programme encourages berth holders to make the most of life with their boat through marina-based training workshops and by supporting organised cruises and social events in marinas.
31 people took part in three hugely over-subscribed yacht and motor boat sessions that covered boat handling and lock workshops run by SeaRegs and Start Point Sailing. The event welcomed a total of 75 berth holders who enjoyed not only coffee and croissants throughout the morning, but also some inspiring seafaring tales from yachting journalist, author and broadcaster Tom Cunliffe.
Participants Mr and Mrs Letherby said: “It was great to see a day like this organised; we met new faces, learned new skills. It would be great to get involved with a cruise in company during the year. This would help our confidence and encourage us to passage further afield.”
Sophie, another berth holder at the marina, added: “‘Adjustable mid deck cleats, a discovery which will change my boat handling forever! Ordered today, arriving on Tuesday. I had a fab two hours afloat; when’s the next event?”
Marina Manager Mark Brimacombe concluded: “It was fantastic to see so many berth holders getting involved. It was especially pleasing to observe berth holders swapping contact details with new friends they had met because of today’s activities.”
The next RYA Active Marina event at Sutton Harbour Marina will be a Ladies Day on 23 May.
