Voila! French Waters No Test For New Shustoke Scout Sailors.
Shustoke SC OnBoard scout sailors take their skills to South of France
Youngsters from 3rd Wilnecote Scouts in Tamworth have had the chance to test out their new sailing skills on international waters for the first time on a sailing activity trip to France.
The 13 Scouts have been learning to sail at Shustoke Sailing Club through OnBoard, the flagship kids’ grassroots sailing scheme run by sailing’s national governing body, the RYA.
And all that practice stood them in good stead when they travelled to La Reserve in southwest France for a Rockley Watersports activity holiday, with two of the Scouts even completing their RYA Stage 1 Youth Sailing Scheme certificate by the end of the trip.
RYA OnBoard provides low cost sailing and windsurfing opportunities for local school and youth groups, enabling kids aged eight to 18 to learn to sail. The 3rd Wilnecote Scouts became the first group to start RYA OnBoard sessions at Shustoke SC, near Coleshilll, at the start of May.
Scout Charlotte Adams said: "I really enjoyed my time sailing at Shustoke. My favourite bit was learning to rig a boat, as when we went to France we had to do it on the water rather than on land. It was good to know how to do it without help from the instructors."
Peter Dunn, Shustoke SC Youth Development Officer, said: “3rd Wilnecote Scouts have been working with Shustoke SC for some time and have now become a group member of the sailing club off the back of their involvement with the RYA OnBoard programme.
“The Rockley staff were very impressed with the Scouts’ sailing ability and basic sailing knowledge. On the last day on the water the wind was blowing a force 4 to 5, which is pretty breezy for new sailors, but all the Scouts got out on the water and enjoyed it.”
RYA OnBoard has got an impressive track record – over 350,000 OnBoard beginner sessions have been run across the UK since 2004, with over 19,000 young people taking up sailing or windsurfing on a regular basis. There are over 230 OnBoard Clubs and Centres nationwide.
Any local schools and youth groups interested in getting involved in OnBoard should contact Jon Sweet, RYA OnBoard Development Officer for Warwickshire, at email@example.com or Peter Dunn, Shustoke SC Youth Development Officer, at firstname.lastname@example.org
Shustoke SC are enthusiastic participants in the RYA’s nationwide London 2012 initiative, Sail for Gold, celebrating Britain's unmatched Olympic sailing heritage and inspiring more people to get out on the water more regularly in this Olympic year.
