Young windsurfing team the West Kirby Warriors kick started the 2013 RYA West Zone Team15 (T15) Inter-Club Championship with a narrow win over their nearest rivals, the Hollingworth Hunters from Rochdale on Saturday at Scotmans Flash Water Activity Centre

Just three points separated the teams and the result shows the Hunters are determined to knock the Warriors off their top spot – held all last year.

It was perfect racing weather: sunny and windy! The West Kirby sailors loved the strong wind which enabled them to 'get up on the plane' , an exciting way of sailing when a craft goes so fast it rides over the water like a speedboat.  Some big wind shifts made it quite tactical as well. Most races had really exciting finishes.

West Kirby dominated the 6.8 fleet with their team battling between themselves for 1st ,2nd and 3rd places – taken by Paul Halliwell, Oliver Eastwood and Sam Kelly.

Ike Bradley-Baker from West Kirby, 2012 World Champion in freestyle showed great racing skills by winning every race in the 5.8 class. In the team picture he is the one lying face down!

T15 was set up by the RYA to help make windsurfing more accessible and appealing to youngsters at a grass roots level.

Fun and informal training sessions take place at T15 clubs all over the country for kids up to the age of 15, which are run weekly by specialist RYA coaches.

The T15 inter-club championship takes place regionally over the summer adding a competitive edge and race training for those keen to hone their skills.

Kit can be borrowed from the clubs and the cost of sessions is kept low.
