The Roseland Wave Riders windsurfing team have made a clean sweep of the 2009 Team15 (T15) interclub windsurfing series, triumphing for the fourth time over their South West rivals at the final regional event at Tamar Watersports, Holsworthy, on Saturday (5 September).
Wave Riders’ Ross Warren (10) achieved a first place in the 3.5m class, beating 18 other sailors. Tom Hassett (15) from Tamar Tigers beat Roseland’s Lucy Grayston into second place by the smallest of margins in the 4.5m class, while Jack Hawkins (14), Nick Sylvester (13) and Joe Cooke (14) made it a hat trick for the Wave Riders in the 5.5m class.
Ross Bromhead (13) of the Tigers and Adam Grayston (14) from Roseland were on form after returning from the world event in Weymouth making the 6.8 fleet very closely fought , particularly races 4 and 5.
All three top places were separated by just a few seconds, with Adam in first place, Christian Body from Stithians in second and Ross in third.
The Stithians Allstars, the Siblyback Water Warriors and the Tamar Tigers fought bravely against the might of the Roseland team in a constant force 3 wind, and everyone enjoyed the challenge. Kitty Harding from the Tamar Tigers said: “It doesn’t matter about the trophies - it’s having fun that counts.”
Roseland Wave Riders will compete in the National T15 Champions Cup at Rutland Water in October.
Supported by industry leaders Neilson, Tushingham/Starboard, Windsurf magazine, Boards magazine and Neil Pryde, T15 was set up by the RYA to help make windsurfing more accessible and appealing to youngsters at a grass roots level.
Fun and informal training sessions take place at T15 clubs all over the country for kids up to the age of 15, which are run weekly by specialist RYA coaches.
The T15 inter-club championship takes place regionally over the summer adding a competitive edge and race training for those keen to hone their skills. Kit can be borrowed from the clubs and the cost of sessions is kept low – to find your local club visit www.team15.org.uk or contact the RYA 0845 345 0400.
