Starcross Yacht Club (SYC) was featured on BBC TV last week (Wednesday 6 December) when Mary Berry’s Country House Secrets visited Charlie, The Earl of Devon, at Powderham Castle.

Mary Berry was seen sailing in day boat with the Earl, discussing the river and the club, which is believed to be the oldest sailing club in the UK.

John Allen, the SYC safety boat manager, said it was a great day: “The programme was a wonderful promotion for the club, not least because Mary (82) was such a fearless sailor in very windy conditions, demonstrating clearly that sailing is a sport for all ages and abilities.”

The day boat came from SYC’s commercial partner, Haven Banks Outdoor Education Centre in Exeter, and was sailed by one of their instructors. Haven Banks centre manager Ben Heddon was able to get some great photos of the action on the river. The safety boat RIB support for the filming was provided and crewed by SYC and Haven Banks.
