A 12-year-old national sailing champion and Worlds medalist from East Haddon was presented with her 2018 RYA Regional Youth Champion Award by the British Sailing Team’s Dylan Fletcher and Sophie Ainsworth at the RYA Dinghy Show on Sunday (4 March).
Northampton Sailing Club’s Imogen Wade was one of 10 2018 RYA Regional Youth Champions from across England and the home countries who received their awards, which celebrate the outstanding achievements and performance of young people on the racecourse, at the show at Alexandra Palace, London.
Sailing with her father Dave, Imogen landed the Mirror National Championships title at Restronguet SC in Cornwall last July, before then finishing as runners-up at the Mirror World Championships, hosted at the same venue a week later. The father-daughter duo also previously won the Nationals in 2015. Imogen races on her own in an RS Tera Sport dinghy too.
The reigning 49er World champion and 2016 Rio Olympian, Dylan, is one of Imogen’s heroes and inspirations having himself grown up sailing with Northampton SC on Pitsford Reservoir.
Sophie Ainsworth, who represented TeamGB in the 49erFX class at Rio 2016, said: “We’re delighted to present these young sailors with their awards.
"Dylan and I both started out sailing in these kind of events and championships and it’s great to meet such ambitious young sailors who have so much passion for the sport. My advice to them is practice as much as you can but to also have fun and to enjoy it.”
Created in 2014, the RYA Regional Youth Champion Awards recognise the outstanding achievement and performance of young people across the range of activities the sports' governing body, the RYA represents, including sailing, windsurfing and powerboating.
