The annual Peter Bartlett Youth Regatta took place at Roadford Lake on 17 September with 19 sailors taking to the water and competing in two fleets – beginner and advanced. Each year the event aims to introduce new sailors to racing and support and encourage those looking to improve their skills.
The conditions were variable this year, starting with some strong wind in the morning making for some great sailing, though it dropped the afternoon which really tested the sailors’ skills! This provided some exciting racing for the youngsters, many of whom learnt to sail with RYA OnBoard, the scheme that introduces children of all backgrounds and abilities to sailing and windsurfing.
Phil Timings, Head of Sport and Recreation at the South West Lakes Trust, presented the winners with their trophies and prizes – donated by South West Lakes and event sponsors Ambrosia, Red Paddle Co and Nookie.
Sarah Hallett, who co-ordinated the event at Roadford, said: “The Peter Bartlett Youth Regatta is the highlight of the youth sailing calendar at Roadford for many young sailors. By providing a supportive and encouraging environment our aim is to raise aspirations to take part in racing and develop relevant skills across a range of ages and abilities. I would like to personally thank all the competitors, organisers and supporters, including Roadford Lake Sailing Club, for making the day great fun and overall a huge success!”
