80 RYA instructors travelled from all points of the region to attend the SW Instructor Training Day at Fairford, Gloucestershire on 3 February.
Following a useful RYA Training update from RYA Dinghy & Windsurf Chief Instructor Amanda Van Santen, the guest speaker, RYA Coaching Development Manager Dave Mellor, delivered a thought-provoking and active presentation about his “geeky training methods” that was much enjoyed.
Attendee Simon Dolphin commented: “How fortunate we were to have a coach from the Olympic sailing squad, talking about the methods that produce such outstanding performances. But then, I’m a tad geeky about training processes as well, so it was right up my street.”
The fantastic range of afternoon workshops included Ropes, Knots and Splicing (Tim Parsons from Technical Marine Supplies), Teaching Navigation (Simon Mace, RYA Dinghy Coach) and Teaching Weather (Pete Muskett, RYA Dinghy Coach). The Women on Water workshop (Jen Miller, RYA Dinghy Coach) and the Rig Tuning workshop (Dan Hallam from RS Sailing) proved popular.
Fairford Community Centre was an excellent venue, with plenty of space and flexibility for running the activities. Thanks to Pete Bone for organising a great lunch.
Simon Holloway of South Cerney Outdoor Education Centre concluded: “I really enjoyed today at Fairford. The venue worked, as did the rig tuning and rope /splicing workshops. The soup was also good!”
