Newtownards Sailing Club
How did you get into sailing?
I started sailing dinghies at school about
age 16 based at Antrim Sailing club. Then started windsurfing at Craigavon with
some dental student friends in about 1980 aged 21 - when I was supposed to be
making dentures in the School of Dentistry!
What do you enjoy most about sailing?
I love being ‘out on the water’ be it
sailing, surfing or paddle boarding. When the wind is light it is very peaceful
and almost meditational, when it’s blowing hard and/or the waves are big the
adrenaline rush is amazing!
What are your top three experiences?
1) Windsurfing across the Irish Sea from
Cushendal to the Mull of Kintyre in a world record time last June!
2) Winning the Downings windsurfing event
3) Wavesailing the reef at Magheroarity on
any big wave day!
Tell us something we don’t know about you:
I was 13th in the longboard division of the
World Surfing Championships in 1990 and I was the drummer in a Punk/New Wave
What do you enjoy doing when not sailing?
I love my job as a dentist... I am privileged
to work with a fantastic team. I also love skiing, especially off-piste! I’m
playing the drums again occasionally with my old band Shock Treatment and I
enjoy playing golf
What are your ambitions for the future?
In the future I would like to set the record
for the fastest windsurf crossing from Donaghadee to Portpatrick, firstly on my
own and then on a tandem! (anyone interested??) I also want to race the ferry
from Belfast to Cairnryan!
Who do you admire the most in sport?
In sport I’m a huge admirer of Sir Alex
Ferguson for his focus, drive and determination amongst other things. In
windsurfing I’m a big admirer of Nick Fletcher as a competitive sailor, as
organiser of the fantastic Downings event, and as a promoter of all things
