Junior and Youth sailing in Wales is managed by the WYA which has its head office at Plas Menai, the National Watersports Centre.

Welsh Sailing is funded predominantly by the Sports Council Wales towards the Welsh Assembly climbing higher sporting agenda.  The association is managed by an: office manager, performance manager and 2 regional development officers based at the North Wales base at Plas Menai and secondly for South & West Wales based in Cardiff Bay Yacht Club.

Welsh Regional Performance Squads

The WYA provide Regional Performance Squads for junior sailors in Optimist & Topper Classes. These squads are selected from the best sailors in the region who are likely to progress to the Welsh National Squad and cover North, South & west Wales. These squads are managed by the Welsh High Performance Manager.

The Regional Performance Squad winter programme consists of 10 coaching days between November and March each year and benifit from domestic amd key National event support and additional camps during the summer linked to club activities.

Welsh National Squad

The Welsh National Squads for: Optimists, Toppers, Laser 4.7, Laser (Radial and Standard), 29er and 420 selection to the National Squad is decided by the Performance Coaching Group using indicators such as Welsh Youth Championships and UK class national results.

The training consists of 5 residential coaching weekends between November and May followed by event suppor at major Championships. There is also Sports Science support through the University of Wales.

WYA organised events include:

Regional CYRC series - which consists of 5 local events per region for new racers to gain their first experiences

  • Welsh School & Club Championships - National Club, School & County Championships at the beginning of July.  For 2010 this will be held in Mumbles Yaht Club on the 3rd & 4th July.
  • WYA/Acorn Adventure Regatta (Last weekend of the summer holidays at Llangorse). The event is for junior sailors only and is ideal for more novice/RYA OnBoard children who would like to try a large event for the forst time.
  • RYA Volvo welsh Youth & Junior Championships - Open to all RYA recognised Junior and Youth classes held on 26th & 27th September.
