RYA Volvo Transition Training Programme
Making a successful move into Youth Sailing
Introduction
RYA Volvo Transition Training aims to support the most talented junior sailors progressing onto the demanding RYA Volvo National Youth Squad.
It provides highly subsidized tailored coachinig, training and competition guidence to fast rtack the development of essential boat handling skills and boat speed.
The RYA Volvo Transition Training specific National Class Coaches oversee the development of sailors in transition, under the direction of the RYA Youth Racing Manager.
RYA Volvo Transition Training can be a key step for sailors with proven Junior record transitioning BUT it is not the only route.
The majority of sailors coming out of junior classes will develop their sailing within the Class open training programmes, Many of the coaches working in that system also work on the RYA National Programme so the quality of the open training programme is also very high.
Some classes associations also offer a 'squad-based' approach to training at this stage and that is certainly worth signing up for if you are not involved in RYA Transition Training.

- 29er ( Girls crew, Boys crew, Mixed Crew)
- 420 (Girls Crew, Boys Crew)
- Laser Radial (Girls or Boys)
- RS:X (Girls or Boys)
Training Programme
There are 2 phases to the Transistion programme.
Phase 1 is the RYA Volvo Opening Training which will consist of 3 training weekend from September to December at verious venues.
in December, on completion of phase 1 there will be a selection process to determine the composition of the RYA Volvo Transition squad.
Phase 2 is the RYA Volvo Transition Training Squad - Comprising of a madatory residental (non-sailing) training camp, and between 4 - 6 training camps including an international regatta to develop relevant skills. This phase will run from January - September.
What support is available?
Sailors attending selected for the RYA Volvo Transition Training will benifit from training and competition programmes designed to help the achieve National Youth squad standard.
- Access training to develop the necessary boat handling skills and boat speed
- Receive coach assistance in preparing long-term training and competition plans based around their individual needs
- Receive sports science support including information and advice on psychology, nutrition, fitness, conditioning and hydration

How to Qualify?
In order to gain selection sailors must normally meet the eligibility criteria and be able to compete for Great Britian in the Olympic Games and be under 16 on the 31st December in the year of selection.

Squad Sizes
The RYA Volvo Transition Training squad sizes can very from 8 - 30 sailors depending on class.
Selection Criteria
RYA Selection assess potential Transition Training sailors against the following criteria:
- Performance, attitude and behaviour at Junior championships and during previous training
- Rate of improvement during training camps
- Previous results
- Age and future potential
- Height and Weight
- Training history
- Class ranking list
- Goals and aspirations
- Any other factors the selectors consider appropiate.
Sailors may be invited to attend some or all of the RYA volvo Transition Training depending on the specific needs and development of the sailors invited while alse enabling other sailors who may emerge later in the programme to be included. All sailors are assessed as individuals.
