Regional fleet update, HYR final call, new website and more
Firstly this month I want to update you on the state of play with hiring the regional fleets.
Since the new Midlands Regional Volunteer Team came into post, a lot of work, led by regional Vice-Chair Roger Day, has been going on behind the scenes to make sure that all our affiliated clubs are able to make the most of what is a fantastic regional resource.
For those of you who don't know, the Midlands region owns fleets of Toppers, Optibats and Laser Vagos clubs can hire to support and extend training/racing activities year round, including potentially borrowing for your OnBoard sailors to compete for the first time in the Regatta fleets at the RYA Zone Championships in September.
With the East and West regions merging to form one Midlands region this year, we have been looking especially at the booking process and the logistics of moving the fleets around the region, and this is where we are currently at...
A new fixed cost of £10 per day has been introduced for all fleets, with rates negotiable for longer term bookings. This is where each fleet is hosted
- 5 Optibats @ Rudyard Lake SC
- 6 Optibats @ Banbury SC
- 6 Toppers @ Rutland SC
- 6 Toppers @ Himley Hall SC
- 2 Vagos @ Bartley SC
A new Google calendar has also been set up - now anyone can see when the fleets are booked out and to whom so you can see if there are existing bookings on days you might want to use them or if they are going to be at another club local to you that you might be able to take advantage of around those dates.
There is one point of contact for booking now too - email email@example.com and Roger or one of his colleagues on the Regional Volunteer Team will be able to help you out.
We hope this has made it easier than ever to use the boats and even more of you will take advantage of this opportunity.
Final call for Honda RYA Youth RIB Area Finals
You have until this Friday (8 July) to get your club entered for the 2016 Honda RYA Youth RIB Area Finals, which are taking place at Burton SC on Saturday 16 July.
This is the first year the East and West Midlands will have drivers competing at the same event so it is set to be a memorable one!
Don't forget, HYR isn't about powerboat racing, it's about teaching your young sailors to be safe, proficient RIB drivers, something that cannot be underestimated both in terms of club development but also engraining youngsters with the right habits and awareness early on.
And remember two clubs in the Midlands have won brand new RIBs and Honda engines over the past two years thanks to the success of their drivers - a prize no club would sniff at.
Will Baldock is the man in the Midlands co-ordinating this year's event so if you want to get sailors involved email the following to firstname.lastname@example.org no later than 5pm...
- Name of competitor(s)
- Age of competitors on the date of the national final (25 September 2016)
- Club name
- Contact email address and telephone number
- Where possible a scan of the entry form - download here

New RYA Midlands website
Coming soon is launch of the new Midlands website, which will feature, amongst other features, a prominent events calendar and section on regional fleet hire and booking.
Again this is something being worked on by the new RVT to bring the RYA Midlands' website in line with the new RYA website style.
The North East's website was the regional pilot so, even though our sections and content will be different, you can get a sense of how the new Midlands website will look here - www.rya.org.uk/rya-regions/north-east/
Reminder - RYA Affiliated Club Membership Census deadline
All our affiliated clubs should now have had a link to complete the 2016 RYA Affiliated Club Membership Census.
Just a reminder that by completing the census before 1200 on 15 August 2016 your club will automatically be entered into a prize draw. One club will be selected at random to receive a £500 prize of their choice and two additional clubs will each receive a £250 prize.
You can read all about the survey and the insights we got on club membership in the Midlands last year here.
Have a great month!
