Aims

  • To develop sailors who show most potential to progress to GBR or IRL National Squads and support those already in National Squads;
  • To build on skills learnt at Junior level and focus on Long Term Sailor Development principles of Train to Compete;
  • To promote responsibility in sailor’s own development and improvement;
  • To develop physical preparation focused towards sports- performance and injury prevention;
  • To understand how to run a Performance Programme and potentially an Olympic Campaign.

Squad Expectations

  • The following is expected by Squad sailors: Specialization in the Sport of Sailing;
  • 100% Commitment to Squad Training sessions
  • Commitment to Squad Programme Events (UK or international);
  • Commitment to compete at Irish Class Association (ILA) Core events;
  • Training on the water at least 6 sessions per month;
  • Balancing school and other commitments;
  • Undertaking a Fitness Training Programme;
  • Agreeing personal targets and plans with coaches and training to meet those targets.

Squad Sailors will have access to:

  • 12 Squad sessions
  • Fitness tests;
  • Sessions on profiling, setting targets/ goals and planning;
  • Lifestyle management education;
  • Support at key outlined Events;
  • Nutrition information and advice;
  • Anti-Doping information and advice;
  • Access to RYA advice and resources

Squad members of a suitable standard will be supported at selected UK National/ international events.

How to apply

  • Read the Squad Selection Policy;
  • Compete at the outlined indicator series;
  •  Fill out an online application form to register your interest;
  •  Selections normally made in October.

*NOTE: Due to the transition nature from junior classes, previous results from other classes will be considered but attendance to the remaining Indicator Events is compulsory. RYANI reserve the right to add further indicator events if the selectors deem it necessary. Racing may be held on the training and selection weekend to help finalise places.
