Junior Editor - Fixed Term Contract (Maternity Cover)

 

The Royal Yachting Association, based in Hamble, near Southampton, is the National Governing Body for all forms of recreational, competitive and professional boating.  It represents dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sportsboats, windsurfing, inland cruising and personal watercraft. 


Job Role: Junior Editor - Fixed Term Contract (Maternity Cover)


Salary: £26,000 per annum


Hours: 35 hours per week


Location: Hamble (hybrid working)


Working with the RYA’s Training & Publications department, the successful candidate will be an important part of the team’s work providing the material that RYA Instructors and students use and learn from. With an understanding of a wide variety of formats, you will have demonstrable editorial and digital skills and a strong understanding of the publishing process.

What you’ll be doing:

  1. Assist the Managing Editor in maintaining the RYA publications list with the production and publishing of reprints, certificates, new editions and new titles.
  2. Ensure RYA publications reflect inclusive language and diverse imagery.
  3. Work with technical editors, external contributors, repro teams from printers, and design contractors.
  4. Liaise with Chief Instructors to ensure that all content meets RYA training-scheme requirements.
  5. Collate, make and store amends from reprints using Adobe InDesign and Asset Bank.
  6. Work with the Senior Editor – Digital to update eBooks with any amends made for the print version at time of reprint.
  7. Write alt-text for images and illustrations in completed publications that meet the teams accessibility standards.
  8. Assist Editor – Audio (Maternity Cover) with audiobook production tasks as required.
  9. Provide occasional eBook support and add subscribers to the digital platforms as required.
  10. Represent the team at key annual conferences and help out on the stand at key boat shows.
  11. Work with the Stock Controller in detailing specifications and timelines for reprints.

Essential Qualifications & Experience:

  • Proven experience of the publishing environment
  • Knowledge of Mac OS, Microsoft Office, InDesign, Illustrator, and PhotoShop
  • Awareness of current accessibility standards
