Sport England has announced a new fund to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee which will support projects that bring communities together and tackle inequalities.
Following the launch of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Activity Fund, grants of between £300 and £10,000 will be available from a National Lottery pot of £5 million, for new initiatives which provide opportunities for people to become more physically active.
Applications are now open for not-for-profit organisations and funds could be used for things such as facility hire and coaching costs, or even small capital improvements.
Clubs may want to access funds to benefit a specific audience either within or beyond their membership, such as Sailability or a particular local organisation or demographic group.
As Gareth Brookes, RYA Regional Development Officer Manager, explains: “This funding stream is a great opportunity for clubs to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and help people come together and get on the water. The focus on providing opportunities for people who may be less physically active is important to consider if applying, I believe this could apply to your members, or even members of your local community that you want to connect with.”
Sport England is particularly keen to see projects built from local experience and feedback, which bring together various groups and communities and make the most of local facilities and equipment. It is expected that projects will then continue to run or have a lasting legacy.
Organisations and clubs are asked to consider how they could work more collaboratively across their community, in order to make the biggest possible impact, and a priority for funding is to support projects working with people in disadvantaged communities.
Online tools on the Sport England website include a Postcode Checker and Local Area Insights to assist clubs in demonstrating a need for their project to strengthen their application.
