Ben's Buzz - September 2021

Catch up with all the latest news for the Midlands with Regional Development Officer Ben Hodgson...

Bookings for this year’s hybrid RYA Affiliated Clubs Conference are now live! Double Olympic gold medallist and broadcaster Shirley Robertson will be returning this year to host the national online evening on Monday 8th November 2021, and this will be followed by our very own in-person RYA Midlands event on Sunday 28th November.

The venue for our event will now be the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas, near Lichfield, Staffordshire, providing a great location for anyone who would like to go for a stroll afterwards. For me and team it really will be good to see people in person again rather than chat on the phone or through a camera, and the occasion will give us all a chance experience afresh and first-hand the camaraderie and community spirit that we have in the Midlands.

As ever, the RYA Affiliated Clubs Conference – both the virtual and regional dates – will provide essential insights to help clubs plan for a successful year ahead, alongside a fantastic opportunity to tap into RYA expertise and network with other clubs to share ideas. It’s ideal for anyone involved in managing your club and its activities, including committee members, flag officers, staff and volunteers. You can now book your ticket here!

Racing rules talks

Our racing rules advisors are currently planning their winter programme and invite any clubs which might like to host a workshop or evening talk to get in touch. A few clubs have already asked but some of you may not previously have been aware of the opportunity to do this. We are very grateful to our Midlands rules advisors David Wilkins and Steve Watson and if your club would like to find out more, please email the Regional Volunteer Team here

Courses for instructors

If you are an RYA Training Centre, remember to check out our regional courses for development opportunities in the coming months and ensure your instructors are aware of these. For instructors who may need to renew their qualification, we have an RYA Midlands Instructor Revalidation Day, for DIs or SIs who may have missed the normal window of opportunity to revalidate their certificates, on Friday 8th October, at SCC Midland Boat Station, Birmingham.

The details can be found at RYA Midlands Instructor Courses and I would also recommend joining the RYA Midlands Instructors group on Facebook to keep in touch with any new opportunities for courses, training sessions and professional development. For any further information or questions, please do feel free to contact me so I can assist.

RYA Musto Youth Awards

Nominations continue to be open for the RYA Musto Youth Awards which celebrate young people across the sport, including for performance, volunteering, instructing, coaching and overcoming adversity. If you know a deserving young person who your club would like to see recognised for their achievements or giving back to the sport, the deadline for nominating is 1st November 2021.

And finally…

Although summer is over, the water is still warm for a while yet, so autumn is a great time to continue running a busy programme of club racing, training and other sessions afloat, alongside lots of clubhouse and onshore activities. As with the forthcoming RYA Affiliated Clubs Conference, it’s also an excellent time to start planning ahead for your membership and facilities.

Look out for our RYA Midlands Sailing Development Officer, Howard Nelson, on our social media channels over the coming month, as he’s been busy recording top tips for accessing funding. Howard has been highly successful in supporting club applications for grants so he’s well worth a listen!

Remember, you can keep up to date with all latest the announcements for the clubs in the region by following @RYAMidlands on Facebook and/or Twitter and tag or message us if you would like us to share any of your news.

Until next time, Ben.
