RDO Update July 2019

A record turnout of 95 young sailors attended the event and handled the windy conditions with style. Personally I was so impressed with the standard of sailing, it shows just what a superb job our clubs and centers are doing a training new sailors. If this event is anything to go by our clubs have a healthy future with so much junior talent in the region! The full event report can be found in our news section.

With so many things happening across the region I have tried to summarise with a few brief updates below:

RYA Annual Club Census

A big thank you to all the clubs who've submitted their return for the RYA Affiliated Club Membership Census - for those that haven't yet got around to it, there's still time! The census remains open until mid-August and the form can be accessed via this link

The census is so important for our regional and national teams as we plan for the years ahead, please can you make sure your club try to submit a return as soon as possible.

North West Sailors Selected for Tokyo 2020 Test Event

An impressive four NW sailors have been selected to represent Great Britain at the Tokyo 2020 test next month, they are:

  •  Laser: Elliot Hanson (25, Macclesfield, Cheshire)

The regatta, held in Enoshima from 15-22 August  2019, is a key performance indicator in the run-up to Tokyo 2020, where Britain will aim to top the sailing medal table for the fifth time in six Games. Keep up to date with all the action on the British Sailing Team website.

Team 15 Interclub Series Reaches half way point!

Our junior windsurfing race series is at the mid-way point following two great events at Debdale and West Kirby.

It's still all to play for at the final two events: 13 July at Hollingworth, then back to Debdale for the last event on 18 August. Keep up to date on the event webpage

British Youth Sailing North Regional Junior Championships

This year’s popular the junior regatta is being held at Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club and will again feature a Championship, Regatta and OnBoard fleet. The Championship and Regatta fleets will be running racing for the following classes:

Topper,  RS Feva, Optimist, RS Tera

For the OnBoard fleet all boats are supplied so you just need to rock up and sail! Only 36 places are available for the OnBoard fleet so enter early to avoid missing out.

Applications open for boats and boards through the John Merricks Sailing Trust

As the official charity partner of OnBoard, the JMST donate a number junior pathway boats and boards (Optimist, Topper, Laser 4.7, RS Tera and Bic Techno 293OD) to promising young sailors who display enthusiasm, drive, talent and commitment to the sport and who may not ordinarily have the opportunity or financial backing to achieve their goals.

Applications are now open via this link. More information can be found on this site.

It would be great if you could encourage eligible families to apply!

North West Region Senior Travellers Trophy

Series Update: With three events completed, this year’s series is shaping up to be a good one with 50 entries already and more expected in the second half of the series. Richard Catchpole currently leads overall with Richard Hemingway leading the veteran class. However with plenty of events left it is still all to play for. Next up is Southport Sailing Club on 16 July. Follow the series on our website

Instructor Training Day Planning

Calling all under 25s. Finally, as part of our preparation for the 2019 Instructor Training Day we are asking any instructors under 25 if they could fill in a short survey. This age group is the most under-represented at the Instructor Training Days and we are keen to find out what would encourage them to attend. The questionnaire can be found on this site

Happy Sailing,
