Club Chat May 2022

This week, ending the 6th May 2022, marks Richard Honeyfords’ last day as Chief Operating Officer for RYANI. We are all sad to see him go and wish him the very best with his new role as Chief Executive Manager at the NI Sports Forum. After 17 years of growing and influencing sailing and boating in NI, he can be very proud! I’m also pleased to note, that Gayle Logan will be our interim COO.

This news is for club committee members and club members – anyone who is interested in what work the RYA is doing in NI.

John Merricks Sailing Trust

Every year, the JMST Scheme provides young sailors from across the country with their equipment, which after two years is given to their supporting organisation.

The boats will be gifted to promising youngsters who display enthusiasm and commitment to the sport and who may not ordinarily have the opportunity or financial backing to achieve their goals.

DEVELOPMENT & PARTICIPATION

Discover Sailing season!

3 clubs have ran a successful Discover Sailing day, providing various opportunities for members of the public to get booked into an activity choice for them!

Although the majority then loved it so much they wanted to try more activities at the club

Lough Neagh Sailing Club kicked off the DS inisitvate on Saturday 16th April, followed by Newtownards Sailing Club on 23rd April and then Ballyholme Yacht Club went with Bank Holiday Monday 2nd May

Online booking provided volunteers to prepare before the event and provide pre and post-event emails to participants. Follow on programmes were promoted where participants could sign up on the day and new members walked away with their membership packs/info.

Looking forward to many more Discover Sailing Days across the country - find out who is running Discover Sailing in your region - https://www.rya.org.uk/start-boating/discover-sailing

OLDER NEWS

RYA Census Insights for Northern Ireland are now available. Thank you to all our clubs who took part in this as it’s key for our planning and funding. The insights document can also be used for your club planning and funding bids too. To discuss how you might use the insights document, get in touch!

There has been a lot of instructor training going on and still lots more to come. I’m already looking at the schedule for the Autumn. Exam pressure, event pressure, and other reasons have led to the cancellation of the proposed course at Easter. But I have confirmed that there will be a DI course in July – pre-entry dates available for booking. Also on the cards pre-summer is an advanced instructor endorsement (dinghy). Get in touch if that is of interest to you.
