I’ve justgot back from the Affiliated Clubs Conference in Bristol, having met lots of clubrepresentatives – it’s really helped me to establish my role, and get to talk peopleabout what’s going on in the region. It was encouraging to see so manydelegates travel a long way to be there – but if you couldn’t, be assured thatnext year’s event will be in a different part of the region.
RYA SouthWest Affiliated Clubs Conference 2019
The 2019conference put the focus firmly on volunteers and explored ways to recruit,manage and retain volunteers, offering over a dozen different club developmentworkshops covering everything from coach and instructor development to thelegal aspects of volunteer and staff recruitment.
InstructorTraining Day
The SWInstructor Training Day will be taking place on Saturday 22 February at RockleyWatersports in Poole. A brilliant opportunity for personal and professionaldevelopment, with updates, expert coaching sessions and various on-the-waterand shore-side workshops, this low-cost event is open to all instructors andassistant instructors. We are organising minibus transport from Plymouth, andwe hope Cornwall too, and accommodation is available at Rockley for just£10/night. Booking will be open shortly.
Coach/AssessorTraining
Twelvepeople took part in a two-day Coach/Assessor Training Course at HorizonsPlymouth in October. A total of 18 people have attended this type oftraining so far this year, and plans are underway for more of these eventsearly next year, which will be expanded to include SIs and experiencedinstructors who want to extend their skills. ClubDevelopment Forums
We areplanning to run Club Development Forums between late January and early March throughoutthe region, and we need venues! If your club would be interested in hosting oneof these events, please contact me to discuss the possibilities.
Safeguardingand Protecting Children Workshop
Thethree-hour Safeguarding and Protecting Children Workshop was developed inconjunction with the NSPCC and Child Protection in Sport Unit. It is suitablefor volunteers and instructors/coaches who work with children and young peopleand the subsidised price is £300 + VAT.Find outmore about hosting a workshop for between 10 and 20 people at your club/centre.

Junior racing news from HPM, Duncan West
SW Zone Squadshave now been selected for RS Feva, Topper, Optimist and windsurfers (BicTechno); their land days were run at Thomas Hardye School, Dorchester onSaturday 9 November and their first camp starts next weekend, 16 November.
I am lookingto get out to clubs over the winter to discuss junior race trainingdevelopments and the new Rationalised Strategy.
