Codes of Conduct - Are you ready for the new season?

The start of a new season is a good time to remind your members of your club’s expected standards of behaviour towards each other. One way to do this is through a Code of Conduct. If expectations are made clear from the outset, it’s much easier for the organisation to take action if someone fails to meet them, for example by providing training, or if necessary by taking disciplinary action which might lead to a warning or other sanction.

The RYA provides a number of examples of Codes of Conduct which can be adopted by clubs:

If everyone understands what’s expected of them, there should be no need to refer to the disciplinary procedure, but it’s much better to have it in place in case it’s needed than to wait until there’s a complaint or dispute before discovering the gaps or weak points in your procedure.
