Would parents of young sailors at your club sign up to the Sports Parents’ Promise? It’s an initiative launched by the NSPCC Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU), linked to their Parents in Sport Week.
The RYA recognises that parents play a vital role in their children’s participation in and enjoyment of our sport, whether they’re providing and maintaining boats and kit, driving their children to the club, volunteering at events, or simply being there with hot drinks, food and encouragement when sailors come off the water. They are also key in relationships with clubs and class associations and often involved in running those organisations.
The Sports Parents’ Promise guides parents to ask the right questions to make sure the club is providing a safe environment, and gives some tips on supporting a child in positive way, without focusing too much on achievement and performance at the expense of enjoyment.
