Thank you to our volunteers
Earlier this month we celebrated #VolunteersWeek – an opportunity to thank all the incredible people that give so much to enable others to get out on the water and enjoy boating. Volunteers are the backbone of the club community and we’d like to thank everyone who contributes time and energy to help make it all happen. Who could you thank?

There will be plenty of opportunities to speak to the RYA’s expert team at numerous regional and national shows and events throughout the year.
At the heart of the shows calendar is the Southampton International Boat Show, powered by Borrow A Boat (13-22 September 2019), where once again RYA members will be able to take advantage of a complimentary ticket - find out more.
RYA Shows and Promotions Manager, Celia Edgington said: “We are delighted to be attending such a variety of events this year, with opportunities across all of the RYA Regions and Home Countries. We look forward to speaking with current and new members, and helping even more people get out on the water.

If your club runs activities for children and young people, or your membership includes under-18s, we recommend that you run through this checklist of the essential things you should have in place to provide a safe environment:
- Does your club have a clear safeguarding policy, adopted by the management committee and applying to the whole club (not just the Training Centre or Cadet section)? Are all club members aware of the policy?
- Do you have a named Welfare/Safeguarding Officer? Does everyone know who they are and how to contact them if they have any concerns about the welfare of a child or the conduct of an adult?
- Do all of your volunteers or staff working directly with children receive appropriate training or briefings on following good practice?
- Do you have clear procedures in place covering safe recruitment (including references and/or criminal records checks), handling concerns and disciplinary matters?
If you’re not sure that you can confidently answer ‘yes’ to all these questions, please see the RYA website for guidance on policy and procedures, a poster for your club noticeboard and information on training - www.rya.org.uk/go/safeguarding.
OnBoard Festivals are back for 2019!
The regional OnBoard Festivals are back this summer and will be taking place throughout the regions. As well as sailing and windsurfing - events will often include tasters of other activities like Stand-Up Paddle Boarding and team building games - and will see local OnBoard venues come together in celebration of all junior sailing, windsurfing and on the water activity. Contact your regional team to find out what’s on near you and get involved.
