420

The 420 class was hosted by Helensburgh SC on Sat 12 Dec on a beautiful clear winter day. With a mirror flat Clyde there was plenty of time for sailors to set up their boats and for the newer sailors to learn a little bit more about boat set-up from the other sailors. A hugely optimistic race officer sent the fleet on the water into a flat calm with plans for photo comps, rock n’ roll (suspending rule 42) races and general Christmas fun. With Christmas music from the coach boat sailors made their way towards the committee boat identifiable by the Christmas tree and with a little bit of Christmas magic a light breeze slowly filled in from the East.

Racing got underway in a light 4-6kts with priority being the hunt for pressure and avoiding the holes. Lots of opportunities for gains and losses across the course made the racing interesting and kept the sailors on their toes. Some significant gains were made by those who had read their sailing instructions best! Tight racing was the order of the day with lots of close finishes and downwind battles across the short races. Great to have the sailors out on the water racing again and looking forward to the next Invitational Training Camp taking place next weekend.

TOPPER CLASS

The Topper class was hosted by Helensburgh SC on Sun 12 Dec with strong breezes and plenty of liquid sunshine. Many of the sailors would have been more than happy to share some of the wind with the 420s who had super light winds the day before. But credit to the whole fleet who all launched to take on some very challenging conditions.

It was great to see all of the sailors making it out to the race course. Even though not everybody completed all the races there was lots of valuable learning that took place and there is no better way to learn about boat handling and racing in strong winds than to get out in breezy conditions.

With significant shifts with the breeze coming off of the land there were plenty of gains to be made around the race course and a dominant performance was put in by Roo Purves to take a clean sweep of bullets. Further down the fleet there was so great racing as sailors did battle with the breezy conditions and each other. The challenging conditions meant the racing was on right up until the finish line with some super close finishes.

OPTIMIST CLASS

The Optimist class was hosted by Largs SC on 19 Dec. The forecast for weekend promised breezy conditions and come race day did not disappoint. However the sailors arrived in much more moderate conditions at the start of the morning so all launched sharply the make the most of these lighter breezes.

The race course was set just off the club house with the walk way along the marina making a perfect viewing gallery for those watching from the shore. With a slightly skewed course and a possible gain feature of more breeze on the right the sailors had plenty to think about when choosing their strategy.

The racing was furious at the front of the fleet and equally competitive further down as sailors fought with the conditions to get further enough upwind to enjoy the sleight ride back down. In the end four races were completed with coach on hand to help sailors back upwind to the slipway for those doing a spot of open water swimming. Good work from everyone to give it a go in some super challenging conditions and the post-racing mince pies and oranges were well deserved.

LASER CLASS

The ILCA Class were hosted by Dalgety Bay SC on 19 Dec. Due to a number of factors a much depleted fleet arrived a Dalgety Bay for the racing. Self-isolating sailors, being 18+ (so not being able to use the U18 sport exemption) and the UK Youth Performance Squad training at WPNSA all took their toll. However an elite group of sailors made it to the race course. Launching into a flat calm those who had made the effort might have been questioning their decision making but the breeze arrived for some close racing.

TECHNO CLASS CHRISTMAS REGATTA

The Techno class was hosted by Clyde Windsurfing Club on 20 Dec. Following on from a day of coaching on the Saturday the sailors were raring to go and joined by some more sailors travelling for the racing. Sunshine and breeze produced the perfect conditions with eight races and a freestyle comp held across the course of the day.

29ER CLASS

The 29er class was hosted by Dalgety Bay SC on 20 Dec. With a decent breeze forecast and a large number of entries the sailors all rigged looking forwards to some exhilarating racing.

Conditions on the water did not disappoint with the breeze gradually building once the boats had launched leading to some adrenaline filled downwind runs and a little bit of swimming for some. Great to see all the boats giving it a go in the challenging conditions and to see some tight racing up the front of the fleet.
