We are super excited to have launched our new OnBoard session cards for clubs and centres!
The cards are designed to help you plan and deliver the six main OnBoard sailing sessions so both instructors and sailors can get the most out of each and every OnBoard activity. As well as key information and top tips for each session there are also additional cards giving even the most experienced instructors lots of great ideas for games, challenges, bad weather alternatives and interactive activities.
The cards can be used to fully understand the scope and detail of a session and its learning outcomes, plus develop greater awareness of how OnBoard activity and learning to sail more generally can help build character, develop mind-sets and provide additional learning opportunities for children and young people.
The six OnBoard ‘character attributes’ of confidence, teamwork, communication, determination, independence and creativity are highlighted within each session and there is also detail on how
OnBoard sessions can link with the National Curriculum.
There are two sets of session cards...
A pack of A6 waterproof pocket-sized cards that can fit into a buoyancy aid and provide you with a quick to hand overview of each session
from check-in to debrief, and a pack of A4 cards, designed to be used
with the more portable cards and featuring greater detail on National Curriculum links, character development exercises, debriefing and
games and challenges plus top coaching tips from experts around the country.
Hannah Cockle, RYA OnBoard Development Officer, said: "I've been an instructor for 12 years and I'd still use them, we are really proud of them and I hope people will give them a proper read.
"The cards help bring out the character attributes whilst making sailing fun. We've just started working on session cards for windsurfing too, which we're really excited about.
"If you haven't already received yours then don't worry they are on your way to you and there are so many ideas included that they would be great to use in any junior sessions or holiday camps you're running over the summer holidays."
Getting the word out there
To help clubs and centres get to grips with how to get the most from the OnBoard session cards, a number of workshops and activities are on the horizon for the autumn and winter.
The cards will be on the agenda at each of the RYA Affiliated Club Conferences, at the regional Instructor Training Days and the RYA Training Conference.
In addition a series of new regional OnBoard Conferences are also in the pipeline, which will act as development days exclusively for OnBoard venues.
Hannah continues: "We ran a pilot in London earlier this year where the main theme was broader learning and we spent the afternoon playing games on the water from the session cards and all the adults LOVED it! There was a real mix of experience there but it really reinvigorated everyone and made people think differently about how they could deliver things they might have been doing for years."
More details of the conferences will be coming soon. In the meantime please let us know you if you are enjoying using the session cards. We think you will :)
