The Torch was brought across the Thames on a London Fire Brigade tender. The Erith YC youth squad, some of who started sailing through the RYA's OnBoard scheme, escorted the tender in their dinghies.

Club Secretary Val Torreggiani said: "The young sailors were chosen on sailing merit by EYC Chief Instructor Ed Sumner. We are delighted to see Aaron Reynolds, EYC Youth Captain carrying the flame as an official London 2012 Torch Bearer."

Aaron was awarded the prestigious RYA Thames Valley and London region Young Sailor of the Year in 2010 for supporting a demanding training programme at EYC.

RYA Chairman for Thames Valley and London Alan Woolford attended the event and said: "This was a great day for sailing."

At the club there was music, drama and other entertainments to greet the Torch.

The celebrations were part of the RYA's Sail for Gold initiative, which aims to inspire new and existing sailors to get out on the water, celebrate our past and present sailing successes, and support the world's most successful Olympic classes sailing team; the British sailing team. Erith is an RYAaffiliated club.
