Adult and junior members of Poole Yacht Club recently marked their achievement in becoming a British Youth Sailing (BYS) Recognised Club with a celebration at the club. The guest speaker was 2012 Olympian, World Match Racing Champion and British Sailing Team sailor Kate Macgregor, who has been a member of the club since childhood.

Commodore Nye Davies thanked members for the hard work the club has done to achieve the award, particularly Katie Hooper, Club Professional and Principal of the Recognised Training Centre, who did a lot to ensure that the club reached the required standard.

The club’s Youth Sailing Chair/Co-ordinator, Sarah Agnew, received the plaque on behalf of the club.

Duncan West, RYA High Performance Manager South and South West, said: “It is great to see Poole Yacht Club achieve BYS Recognised Club status, the first of three clubs in the region to be appointed by BYS, in recognition of the high standard of race training the club offers and the numbers of young sailors who are introduced to the sport of dinghy racing.

“Initiatives like the Commodore’s Cup and inviting young sailors to crew in the yacht racing are testimony to a club that has a strong youth section that is welcomed as part of the whole club. It was very interesting to hear Kate’s sailing story and how much was linked to Poole YC, both at the start of her sailing and now sailing in the club’s keelboat fleet.”

Katie Hooper added: “The children found it very inspiring hearing Kate’s story and could relate to it more as she started sailing here and is still an active member."

The RYA works in partnership with sailing clubs through the British Youth Sailing (BYS) Recognised Club Programme to help them establish or enhance their junior race training. A BYS Recognised Club allows junior sailors to develop their sailing and racing skills and encourages young sailors at grassroots level to stay in the sport.

The BYS Recognised Club status distinguishes those sailing clubs with a commitment to the development of junior and youth racing and race training, which is delivered in a safe and fun environment.
