This special event brought together top sailors from all classes who are either Scottish National Champions or Scottish Traveller Champions. Twenty one boats from seventeen different clubs took part over the weekend of the 13th/14th of October at East Lothian Yacht Club in North Berwick.

The regatta is run on handicap pitting International Moths against Flying Fifteens, Optimists against Musto Skiffs and of course youth versus experience over six races. All the sailors are certainly talented yet certain classes prefer certain conditions so it was all to play for.

John Wilcox ELYC Commodore stated. “North Berwick’s weather delivered a wide range of conditions to test the visiting Champions including, as a special treat for the last race, some wonderful sunshine and 10 knots of breeze”.

Overall there were tricky conditions with light airs and grey skies on Saturday that allowed two races. The double handed boats led the results table with an overnight leader of Alan Henderson and Alastair Barrie from Prestwick Sailing Club in their Osprey, trailed by a 29er, Flying Fifteen and an RS400, clearly two minds were better than one in the challenging breeze.

Sunday brought a steadier breeze which allowed four good races to take place in which Jono Shelley of Largs Sailing Club managed to pick up three 2nd places and a 1st to leapfrog the competition in his Musto Skiff and seal the title of 2018 RYA Scotland Champion of Champions.

Abbie Hewitt, RYA Scotland High Performance Manager commented. “It was the first time I have seen this event run, what a spectacle. It is great to get such a mix of high level sailors in different classes competing against one another out on the water. Everyone raced with a high level of professionalism and respect for one another making it a really fun weekend despite the grey conditions surrounding us.”

“Ben Wilcox RO did an outstanding job of getting 6 races in over the 2 days tackling some challenging breeze on the Saturday. The venue for the event was brilliant. It was really encouraging to work with a club with so many high skilled volunteers who made the weekend run smoothly and with a smile, so a massive thank you goes to all that helped.”
