Sailing clubs across the North East region are inviting local people to join them on the water in May!

More than 25 clubs in the region will be throwing open their doors and welcoming all-comers to try sailing as part of the national RYA Push the Boat Out campaign.

New research by the RYA shows that a quarter of people have never tried an outdoor pursuit, yet two in four want to be more active and nearly a third want to get more fresh air.

Sam Usher, RYA Regional Development Officer for the North East, said: So many people still dont realise how easy it can be to get into sailing and windsurfing, and that you dont even need to own a boat or board as clubs and centres have ones you can borrow or hire.

Once youve learned the ropes, you can sail on your own or with your partner, friends or kids in dinghies or big boats, inland or on the coast. And after youve given your mind and body an on-the-water workout, nothing beats having a drink by the water on warm summer evenings!

Thousands of people across the North East regularly go along to their local sailing club, taking out boats or windsurfers on the regions reservoirs, lakes, rivers and coastline.

RYA Director of Sport Development, Alistair Dickson said: If youre looking for something completely different to do with the family, a workout in the fresh air or perhaps to get back out on the water after having a break, then pop down to your local sailing club or centre during May and Push the Boat Out.

Sailing kit and safety equipment is provided and no experience is needed - the message for anyone wanting to try sailing in May is that all you need is a pair of old trainers you dont mind getting wet and your sense of fun!

Taster sessions across the North East region are either free or low cost. Some need booking, so to be sure of your chance to get on the water, check out all the details for your nearest Push the Boat Out open day at
