At 31 Harriet is its youngest commodore to date and the club is thrilled that she is now at the helm. She is also Honorary Vice President of the Gravesend Sea Cadets.
Harriet is the third generation of her family to become commodore; her grandfather, James (Jim) Twyman, joined in 1946 and was commodore twice. Later her parents Steve and Penny Davies held the post, as well as other members of the family being very involved.
Last summer Harriet's son Edward started sailing at just three days old, with the help of his father of course!
Harriet is very much looking forward to the new season, commenting: “2020 was difficult for so many people, however at the club our members benefited from being part of our family oriented community. It was for some a lifeline plus a crash course in IT! We exchanged more than just sailing tips; we held regular online social events and once permitted enthusiastically took to the Thames as much as possible.
“We were able to enjoy a shortened sailing season despite the complications around Covid, with both racing and cruising on the agenda. Our final event at the club was the end of season cruise and many of our members joined in. Dinghies and cruisers alike sailed from Gravesend to Greenhithe; it was a joyous day and we all loved the sense of freedom that only sailing can give you.”
Situated at the gateway to the tidal Thames Gravesend Sailing Club is particularly well suited to those wishing to learn how to sail. Harriet explained: “You definitely don't have to own a boat, the club has sailing dinghies available for members to hire and there will always be someone keen to take you out either on a dinghy or cruiser. The club also runs RYA training courses which are targeted at newcomers to this sport as well as those wishing to improve their skills.
“Sailing is one of those sports that is ideal to undertake in our present climate. It is outside, people can easily distance and of course being on the river there is plenty of fresh air for everyone. It’s a very good form of exercise and excellent for the health and wellbeing of our members. With the new season commencing in April we are looking forward to welcoming even more new members and visitors this year.”
