We are sad to report that Ron Burdon, an RYA stalwart and dedicated volunteer, died on 7 September, aged 88.
Ron was, in his long involvement with the sport, a secretary for the RYA SW Regional Committee, one of the first principals of the Somerset Youth and Community Sailing Association and a national and regional coach. He also worked alongside the late Bob Bond when the RYA teaching method was first introduced in the 1970s. He received an RYA Community Award for services to training from HRH The Princess Royal in 2002.
As a popular coach, dinghy instructor, Yachtmaster instructor, powerboat trainer and first-aid teacher, as well as an avid sailor, Ron wore his RYA tie proudly, and was still involved in coaching right up to the 2012 Olympics in Weymouth. He will be sadly missed.
Ron’s funeral will take place at midday at St Andrews Church, Chardstock, Devon on Friday 21 September, and his family would very much welcome the attendance of his RYA friends and colleagues.
Ron is pictured here with his wife Jennie, who survives him.
