Two weeks on back to back competition took place at Largs Sailing Club with the UK Laser National Championship and the Topper National Championships taking place from the 28th of July through to the 9th of August.
Our performance sailors did well on home waters, with Scottish Sailors on the podium in every class. Lewis Smith from Granton and Glasgow’s Gordon Cogan Sivarajan both finishing 3rd in the Standard and Radial classes respectively. While Tom Mitchell from Dundee came 2nd overall with Jasmin Robertson from Nairn SC finishing 3rd female in the Topper gold fleet. Whoop, whoop!
Of course it was also a busy couple of weeks for the club and we caught up with the volunteer events coordinator, John Connelly to ask how he thanks the volunteers.
“Most of the work is done by the volunteers and for the Laser event alone we had 90 volunteers, which I somehow coerced into helping!”
“I couldn’t do it without them, I’m sort of the general trying to organise them and it’s all dependant on them turning up and doing what is needed and they all did, it’s amazing.”
“How we thank them is we have a party in September and bring all the volunteers together to have some drinks and nibbles. However most of the volunteers volunteer because they like to give something back to sailing and they also know it’s a valuable source of income for the club.”
The younger members of the club who took part had a great event and they also knew how to to thanks a 'Top banana' volunteer like John, with a card!
The summer has seen some fantastic events across Scotland, all run by volunteers. These range from summer programmes delivering RYA Training to open club events encouraging participation or competition such as Tummel week or West Highland Week. It has been a super summer and all thanks to those volunteers.
RYA Scotland recognises the extent volunteers put into making our sport happen. While events like the Annual Awards provide an opportunity to celebrate these achievements we are continuing a conversation on our social media around volunteering and are looking for your input.
We are in the process in developing a Volunteer Framework to help clubs and organisations equip their volunteers. Join in the conversation @RYAScotland and help us shape the future of volunteering in our sport.
