Another very successful SW annual Cruising Conference took place at South Devon College on Saturday, 13 January, with many of the 65 attendees leaving very positive feedback about the day.
Supported by all members of the RYA regional team, both volunteers and staff, the event included keynote presentations from several Cruising, Legal and Environment representatives from RYA HQ, whose talk Brexit Myths and Monsters discussed current and expected developments in cruising, pre- and post-Brexit, and from Simon Rowell on how to source and interpret internet weather forecasts.
A huge variety of break-out workshops included GRP repair, winch maintenance, short-handed cruising, rigging, modern rope and splicing, MAIB information, radar and AIS information.
South Devon College provided an ideal location, with good IT and catering facilities, and excellent support from administrator Carly Drew, marine lecturer Dave Peart and his students and the college support staff.
A gift of books was presented to the marine department by the deputy chairman of the SW regional team, Chris Davis, in gratitude for the students' help in guiding attendees around the campus during the event.
Plans are now under way to hold another Cruising Conference in 2019, and information about the venue and agenda will be available in due course.
