Over 100 people from all the counties of the region braved wet and windy conditions to attend the SW Affiliated Clubs Conference 2018 at the Mount Batten Watersports Centre in Plymouth on 10 November.

A keynote presentation from Ian Walker, RYA Director of Racing, discussed his role in the organisation, and explained a little about the operation of the Racing Department before giving some insights into preparations for Tokyo 2020.

The new Chairman of the RYA, Chris Preston, explained what his responsibilities are so that the RYA is best placed to deliver for its members, its mandate and its mission. He explained that with around 80,000 volunteers, the organisation needs to communicate well with its members.

John Banbrook, outgoing Commodore of Bowmoor Sailing Club, inspired members with some of the exciting and innovative ideas the club has implemented in recent years to retain and increase membership, particularly amongst families.

These presentations were followed by a roundup, by Regional Development Officer Tony Wood, of the fascinating insights the RYA has gained from the recent Membership Survey.

The conference also included a total of 12 different workshops on a huge variety of topics which left all the attendees ready to start implementing ideas and improvements back at their clubs.
